Jaguar S Type
The Jaguar S-Type was produced at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham, England. The car was styled by Geoff Lawson, the then styling director and is based on the Jaguar DEW platform/Ford DEW platform, shared with the Lincoln LS. S-Type. Many other components were taken where possible from from other Ford/ Lincoln models. This midsize luxury car was introduced in 1999 to the auto industry as a revival of its predecessor (the 1960s Mark 2 and the C Type which was a 1950s sports/racing design.

Jaguar S Type
Two engines were available, a 4.0 litre V8 AJ-V8 unit built by Jaguar and a new 3.0 litre V6 which was provided by Ford. These allowed the Jaguar S Type to retain its rear wheel drive.
In2001 a Sports model was introduced to add a more modern look to the trim.
2002 saw the introduction of the S Type R which was a supercharged version with a 4.2L V8 engine combined with an Eaton M112 supercharger producing 400 horsepower in the hope that the car would compete in the same sector as the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E55 AMG. This was the most expensive of the S Type coming in at just over £50,000 ($58,000).
Since a major mechanical overhaul had occurred just two years earlier, in 2004 Jaguar concentrated on righting two major S-Type wrongs – the styling and lack of diesel engine. The former was addressed via a subtle but effective ‘tail’ lift, which resulted in all new sheet metal aft of the rear window, as well as a leaner side sills and a more scalloped bonnet preceding an upright grille. It still looked frumpy – but only less so now. The diesel engine was a 153kW 2.7-litre twin-turbo-charged V6 producing 207 horsepower.
Special editions were introduced over the next 2 to 3 years but product was eventually discontinued in 2007. The model was then replaced by the Jaguar XF

Ken asks…
Which type of car would you recommend getting: Jaguar S- type, Jaguar X-type or the Infiniti G35?
I know that the S-type is better than the X-type, but I’m trying to save a little money.
Let’s say all three of these cars were in the year ranges of 2001-2004
Which kind of car would you recommend buying and at what year?

Doug answers:
My father purchased a brand new Jaguar S-Type in 2000 and just a few years ago gave it to me with 120,000 miles on it. It was not dout a sexy car, I had aftermarket wheels had the front grill chromed and leather inside however, it was the biggest headache car my family has ever had. Unreliable understates how poorly the car was built. We went through 3 engines and 2 transmissions through 8 years. I sold the car about 6 months ago now and bought a 2008 Infiniti G35, I couldn’t be happier (so far) because it hasn’t had any problems and is fairly fast!
The fact is that Jaguars were very poorly made in the early 2000′s and it isn’t until recently (just like Mercedes) that they stepped up the quality. It’s important to remember that “if you play with the big boys then you pay with the big boys” , so if you are not ready to shell out some serious money for repairs then stay away from early Jaguars. Good Luck.

Joseph asks…
how many miles is too much for a jaguar type s?
i found a 2002 jaguar type s with 115000 miles for 8 grand
and dont know if i should buy it because of the miles

Doug answers:
I’m looking for S-Type myself and have been watching prices for last 6 months – that’s a little high for such a high milage car. Auto trader website has cars with around 60 – 70k for about the same price. There is one 4.2 for less than £7k.
Also much depends on the engine size – the 4.2 being slightly more pricey than the 3.0.
Improvements were made for the 2002 model year which gave the car better handling, which had been below par when the car was first introduced, so it’s a good year to go for, but I would be looking for a lower milage one (60-70k) for about that price.

Sharon asks…
what is the difference between the S-type and X-type Jaguar cars?
Which one would you recommend getting used and what year?

Doug answers:
Everything. The X-Type is a little Ford based on the European Mondeo chassis, where the S-Type shares a chassis with the Lincoln LS. The X-Type is AWD, the S-Type rear wheel drive. The S-Type comes with a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine, 4.2L v8 engine, or 4.2L supercharged v8; the X-Type has a small 2.5 or 3.0l engine. The S-Type is equipped with a better transmission, and the two share very few common parts.
I would recommend getting a 2004 or newer S-Type, either a 3.0 or an S-Type R (the supercharged v8). In the end, a lot more reliable, easier to maintain and less aggravating than the cheap X-Type.

how do i get the hood latch unjammed my S-type jaguar?
how do i get the hood latch unjammed my S-type jaguar?

Doug answers:
Go to the local parts store and ask for a BFH. Two or three good hits with it, and it should be problem solved.

William asks…
Jaguar type-s , a good car or just a nice cat?
Any jag user to give us a prof opinion about s-type engine and general comments?

Doug answers:
You need to specify which S type you mean ?
The true classic 3.8 S type made by Jaguar, or the late mock up, models made by Ford.
I feel the latter have lost the true Jaguar looks, and charisma in automotive design, and identity, thanks to the Ford designers, but I have to say, the build quality, performance, and reliability are all very much improved.
But I can´t see in 25 yrs time, when this model retires a classic, it being held with the same esteem image, as the true classic 3.8 S Type 60s forerunner.
The main downfall of which, was the dreaded rust, and mechanical reliability.
If I were you, and wanting relatively trouble free motoring, go for a late model, but it will always be a bit of an impostor, and who knows, if Ford do find someone to take Jaguar off there hands,( Possibly Tata ?) this model will never have the true credibility, and unique style, the original just oozed, along with the oil leaks.
Check out the classics in your area, if you are in the USA ?there are lots of rust free examples? Who knows you might find a nice one going cheap ?
But beware, take a Jaguar specialist with you, to check it out first !
Good Luck!

Donald asks…
I own an X-type diesel Jaguar?
The service schedule says that the service interval is 12,500 miles, but, my colleagues at work tell me that a diesel engine’s oil and filter should be changed every 6,000 miles, so rather than take it into the dealers to have this done, is it a simple process? I am use to changing oil and filters but have never done one on a Jag before.
Thanks Buda, but if that’s the best you can do then please don’t wnswer any more questions that you know nothing about.

Betty asks…
Which car should I buy, Ram 2500 diesel or Jaguar S-Type R?
After a lot of research, I found two cars that I like, an ’05 Ram 2500 diesel and and ’03 Jaguar S-Type R. They are very different cars, but you’ll see my reasons later. I don’t know which one to choose and here’s why:
1. I want to go off-roading with my friends and the Ram is the best choice BUT I don’t know if I should base my choice off of one activity.
2. If I go off-roading, I will probably have to stop when I go to college (I’m in 11th grade right now) BUT I will keep my car throughout college and I don’t want to get stuck with a bad car.
3. The Ram has better fuel economy than the Jag (20/27 with a programmed ECM vs 16/22) BUT diesel is much more expensive, than gas.
4. The Ram has more miles than the Jag (182K vs 119K) BUT 182K for a diesel isn’t half of the duty cycle while 119K for a gas is a lot.
5. The Jag is significantly cheaper than the Ram ($10K vs $16K) BUT the Jag is more expensive to maintain and I might have to spend the difference on repairs.
6. The Jag is worthless any time it goes off of a paved road BUT I only go off of a paved road about 9 times a year.
7. The Ram is much better any time I need to haul something bigger, than my backpack.
8. The Jag is much better than the Ram at city driving (probably 85% of my driving) BUT it’s worthless at everything else.
9. The Ram will drive on pretty much every kind of terrain BUT it’s a less comfortable ride, than the Jag.
10. The city where I live had heavy rains recently and most of my friends with sedans got their cars flooded while my friends with trucks were fine.
11. The Ram seats 6, while the Jag seats 4.
12. The Ram will give me parking problems and can’t fit into tight spaces while the Jag is very agile and can be parked everywhere.
Some more points:
1. I’m not leaning towards any of those cars. I just want to know which one would better suit me.
2. Both cars will earn equal amounts of respect from my friends.
3. The Jag is a clear winner in the city but a loser as soon as it’s out of the city.
4. Both cars are equally fun to drive in their own way.
Bottom line: should I buy the Ram 2500, which has enormous potential (off-road terrain, hauling, carrying passengers) BUT I won’t use that potential every day OR should I buy the Jag, which is better at the things I do every day, BUT will put me in trouble if I ever step out of my everyday routine?

Doug answers:
Buy the Dodge. The Cummins will be the most reliable motor you will ever own. It can last 400K+ easy. The Jags from that year were not that great anyways, just a rehanged Ford with a higher price tag.

Jaguar s type rear parking sensors?
Hi every one I have a 2004 jaguar s type 2.7 diesel I have noticed that the rear parking sensors do not work. Replaced the fuse nothing there is no switch to turn the sensors on or of. All of the sensors are clicking apart from one can I replace just one sensor or do I have to replace all of them. Any idears would be great.

Doug answers:
You can replace just the one sensor without any issues.
I’m sure I read something about problems/issues with S type parking sensors, I read it in the JEC. I can’t find the magazine though. I could be wrong too. Lol!

James asks…
Jaguar s type bumper?
I have a 2004 jaguar s type 2.7 diesel v6 sport one of my rear sensors are not working so I need to take the rear bumper off how or what is involved to remove rear bumper. Cheers .

Doug answers:
2004… Is it a facelift one or not?
If it’s the old shape then this will help you: http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32806
for a facelift one it’s very similar, there are quite a few 10mm (AF) bolts in the boot, and a few more which you can get to by removing the rear wheels and peeling back the wheel arch liners.
I recommend undoing the bolts in the boot last, because when the bumper comes off, you can use your knees to hold the bumper up so it doesn’t drop and break any parking sensor wires.
